The Wine Merchant Top 100 2019 + Best Value White Winner 2019
Vila Nova Alvarinho - Bright citrus aromas with hints of mandarin. Fresh and lively on the palate with citrus characters, textural stone fruit and appealing minerality on the finish.
Casa de Vila Nova is located in the sub region of Sousa, the Vinho Verde Demarcated Region in the North of Portugal, the vinho verde lands are exposed to the Atlantic Ocean winds and influence. Soils, microclimate, grape varieties and the unique characteristics of the wine culture, distinguish it from all other wine regions of the world. The grapes are harvested by hand in 20 kg boxes that are quickly transported to the winery where the grapes are destemmed then a soft pressing takes place and fermentation in temperature controlled vats.
Here's what some of the Sommelier Award judges had to say:
'Undoubtedly worthy of Gold, this Alvariñho was ‘aromatic and powerful, with creamy, delicate white fruit’, according to Francesca Turra of Mondrian London, while The Harrow at Little Bedwyn’s Sue Jones described it as ‘exotic, tropical and stony’. Hakkasan’s Olivier Gasselin found it ‘ripe, bright and zesty, with lovely ripeness and a confected-lemon note, as well as some salty minerality’. Consultant Emanuel Pesqueira, meanwhile, added praise for its ‘great value for money’.
A good match for chicken salads, fish and sushi.
