Rioja Reserva Vega Del Rayo - Beautifully balanced, this Rioja Reserva is one of my biggest selling wines. Definitely worth treating yourself to a bottle or two. An intense wine classically crafted. It has a nose of plums and wild blackberry with hints of citrus fruits and raisins. The sweet vanilla and brown spices from ageing in wood, are well balanced. Ready to drink now but can be aged for up to five years. Grapes for the Vega del Rayo wines are sourced from this family company's 200 hectares estate in the Rioja Alta. The first vintage was 2001, and they have since won many top international awards and gone from strength to strength. This wine is produced from selected Tempranillo, Mazuelo and Graciano grapes sourced from 30 to 40 year old vines in the Rioja Alta vineyards whose distinctive stony soils are ideal for the long, even ripening of quality grapes. The fruit is hand harvested in mid October. Each variety is fermented separately. The clear wine is then racked to 2nd and 3rd year American and Russian oak barrels for 24 months maturation before blending and bottling. |
