Nebbiolo d'Alba, Poderi Colla - Very fine perfumed Nebbiolo with more character and finesse than many Barolo wines. Delicious aromatics of liquorice and ripe red fruit on the nose, with cherry, blossom and notes of leather on the palate. An extremely elegant wine balanced by vibrant acidity and perfectly poised tannins.
The hand-picked Nebbiolo grapes are placed in small baskets and taken to the winery where they are de-stalked and softly pressed. The grapes are then macerated on the followed by a malolactic fermentation which is completed before the winter. The wine is matured in some Slavonian and some French oak casks, partly new, for 8 to 12 months.
Last time I was in Piemonte I made a point of visiting again the Poderi Colla Estate as for the past 10 years it has produced not only some of this regions finest wines but also the most consistent year after year.
Founded in 1993 by Tino and Federica Colla, brother and daughter of the legendry Beppe Colla. The wines come from three outstanding sites in Alba and cover nearly the entire spectrum of Albese styles. The Colla family truly make wine in the vineyard, with a non-interventionist approach to wine making, enabling each wine a unique expression of site and vintage.
