Chateau Haut Marbuzet St Estephe - The highly regarded wine of Château Haut Marbuzet. The dark purpley black colour suggests great concentration; powerful aromas of toasty oak, black cherries and smoky coffee are enhanced further by rich sweet fruit with hints of tobacco, and there's considerable weight and grip on the long finish. Oh yes!
The vineyard is located on the sunny gravel ridge of Marbuzet, which is naturally well drained and also contains clay and iron in the sub-soil, apparently adding individuality to the wine. Haut-Marbuzet is only made with the more concentrated grapes found on vines older than 12 years. Aged only in new barriques (all 1500 renewed each vintage?!) for 18 - 24 months depending on the vintage.
You need full-on flavoured food with this powerful wine - obviously beef or lamb stews come to mind but vegetable dishes in rich reduced sauces would also be good, and perhaps a classic Toulouse (strong sausage) or duck cassoulet (made with beans).
