Balgownie Estate Shiraz - Premium quality fruit from 40-year-old, low-yielding, estate-owned vines. These mature vines have produced a wine with great balance, length and fruit intensity. Dark cherry and plum dominate the nose with hints of spice and leather. These flavours carry on to the palate and integrate nicely with the soft, supple, savoury tannins. Can be cellared for up to 10 years.
In the late seventies and early eighties the Cabernet and Shiraz produced at Balgownie were widely considered some of Australia's finest. With the sale of the winery to one of Australia's well known multinationals, quality suffered, however their early reputation lived on and when the estate was sold again in 1998 it was picked up by Des Forrester, one of the wineries early devotees. Fortunately Des had deep enough pockets to restore the estate to its former glory and Balgownie resumed production of some of Australia's greatest wines. This current releases overseen by winemkaer, Mark Lane, typify the house style and is, once again amongst Victoria's proudest, most sumptuous wines with concentration balanced by finesse. A wine whose unquestionable power is yielded in the most refined manner imaginable.
