Domaine de Vedilhan, Serica Syrah - This rich, slightly spicy red wine is a good illustration of why Shiraz (Syrah) is the most noble of the grape varieties of southern France.
Here it has been blended with 10% Viognier which adds a light floral perfume to the nose and much finesse. It is a dense barrel aged wine, with spicy, brambly-fruit flavours coupled with violet, blackberries and liquorice! It has a lovely smooth texture which makes it the perfect accompaniment to many foods especially meaty casseroles. This is a real find even if it was twice the price! Should be carafed for maximum flavour. The beauty of the label has also to be seen to be believed - as exquisite as the wine inside!
Produced by a family-run domain in the Languedoc, South of France. The name ‘Serica' means silk in Latin - in the 14th century silk production in the south of France was as widespread as viticulture is today, hence the name as Shiraz (Syrah) is often described as being silky!
